We are a group of residents who have got together to help a refugee family settle in Bridport and rebuild their lives.

Why?

Millions of people have been forced to flee from their country to escape war, conflict, famine and abuse. Bridport is a caring and supportive community and by supporting our project you can help a family adapt as quickly as possible to their new surroundings and become valued members of our community.

How will we do this?

We are part of the government’s Community Sponsorship Scheme for refugees and have joined around 100 other local community groups across the UK working to welcome a family to their town.

As part of this government scheme, we have:

  • Secured local authority consent to resettle the family
  • Found affordable housing for the family
  • Raised £20,000 (but more is needed!)
  • Arranged tuition in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

We will:

  • Help the family as they settle into our community
  • Help the family towards independence and employment

Bridport Town Council supports this initiative.

David Rickard, Leader of the Council, said: “Bridport Town Council would be happy to welcome a refugee family to our town. Supporting this initiative is another way to show our commitment to the values we embrace as a Rights Respecting Town.”

We are looking for help from the people of Bridport.

You could help by volunteering your experience and skills to support the family before and after their arrival, particularly in these ways:
  • Fundraising
  • Painting and decorating
  • Helping to teach English
  • Arranging social and cultural activities
  • Helping to liaise with schools and the medical centre
  • Putting us in touch with a local landlord able to rent a home to a refugee family
